How does Tally handle your data?
Tally never connects to your bank, has no analytics, no ads and no AI, and keeps your budget on its own server over HTTPS. This page lists everything it stores and every outside connection it makes.

What does Tally never do?
It never asks for your bank login, never uses analytics or ads, and never uses AI. These are rules the product is built around, not settings.
- No bank logins and no bank aggregators such as Plaid. You import a file you downloaded yourself. How importing works.
- No analytics or tracking code, in the web app or the Android app. No analytics, crash-reporting, advertising or billing library is in either.
- No ads. Tally has no ads and no analytics code, so there is nothing to sell your data to.
- No AI. Categories come from rules you can read, plus copying the category you gave the same merchant before.
Where does my budget data live?
On the Tally server, which you reach over HTTPS. Your transactions, categories and budgets sync there, and each user's data is kept apart by user id.
| What | Detail |
|---|---|
| Transactions and accounts | The rows you import or add by hand, and their accounts. |
| Categories and rules | Your categories, your rules and the categories you chose. |
| Budgets | Monthly targets and rollover settings. |
| Tags and splits | Tags on transactions and how purchases are split. |
| Manual assets | Things you enter by hand, such as cash, a house or a loan. |
| Settings | Your preferences. |
| Sign-in records | Sessions and device sign-ins, stored as hashes, not the raw values. |
| Browser push subscriptions | Only if you switched on web reminders. |
It is kept as rows in a database on the server. On Android there is also a read-only copy on the phone so the app can show your budget, and the only thing you can do offline is queue an import, which uploads when you are back online.
The server copies the database every day and keeps 14 daily copies. See security for sign-in, pairing and backups.
What outside connections does Tally make?
A short list, shown separately for the web app and the Android app. Anything not on it does not happen.
The web app
| Connection | What is sent | When |
|---|---|---|
| Only the Tally server | The web pages, fonts, scripts, charts and the QR code library all load from the Tally server itself. No CDN, no Google Fonts, no outside scripts. | Always |
| api.frankfurter.app, a free public exchange-rate service | Your home currency code and a list of the currency codes in the data. No transactions and no names. | When you tap Refresh rates or change your home currency |
| api.frankfurter.app, for history | A date range and currency codes. | Only if an operator runs a manual history load |
| The push service run by your browser maker | A short notification, such as a reminder to check your money or the weekly recap with one net figure. It uses the standard Web Push scheme, which encrypts the message for your browser. | Only if you switched on notifications |
The Android app
| Connection | What is sent | When |
|---|---|---|
| The Tally server | Budget traffic, only after you pair the phone. The Budget tab can also show the web app inside the app. | When you use Budget |
| cdn.jsdelivr.net and latest.currency-api.pages.dev | A plain request for the file of current exchange rates, with a backup address. No Tally account details, because the converter has no account. | When rates refresh |
| api.frankfurter.dev | A request for the history of a currency pair over a date range. | When you open a chart |
| api.coingecko.com | A request for a coin's price history. | When you open a crypto chart |
| Your own email app | Nothing is addressed for you. The draft carries the app version and the Android version, and nothing personal. | Only if you tap Send feedback |
The rate services can see the phone's internet address and which rates it asked for. They get no Tally account information, because the converter has no account. Details of the converter are on the currency page.
Your bank login stays yours.
Tally is in development and not open for sign-ups yet. Here is how the files you bring in are read.
